What, Didn't The Sheet Music To "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" Arrive In Time?

Bad enough: The choir at Immaculate Conception's 11:15 Mass today sang "Mary, Did You Know" for Offertory.  Anita Moore explains better than I ever could why this song is completely inappropriate for Mass.  "You mean the Immaculate Conception wasn't that of Jesus?"

Worse: After the Agnus Dei and the "Lord, I am not worthy," the instrumentalists (not the choir) played "Winter Wonderland" (!) for the distribution of the Eucharist, hence this post's title.  I kept thinking of this, about a neighborhood near where I grew up.

Almost as bad: the lame music for the revised Mass parts, and the setting of the Gloria (with the old mistranslation) to "Angels We Have Heard On High."  The Gloria is not, not, not a verse and refrain piece!

Sigh. "Mary, Did You Know?" is downright heretical. In addition to being stuff and nonsense, it flatly denies a defined dogma of the Church, viz., the Immaculate Conception. Heresies should not be promulgated at Mass! Somebody with some pull at your parish needs to figure this out and put the kibosh on it!

P.S. I still hear the lame, jejeune Marty Haugen Mass of Creation with the revised translation shoe-horned into the effete melodies. Does anybody seriously think the choirs of angels with whom we sing "Holy, holy, holy" REALLY sounds like that?

Anita, I would, except I doubt it'd accomplish anything. Our parish's motto is "Diversitas intra Unitatem", or "Diversity within Unity." I can't go hurting feelings, you know, and we have to applaud the choir afterward even if they sounded like they had no rehearsals whatsoever.

But believe it or not, mine is regarded as one of the most conservative parishes in Reno-Sparks!

Paul, time to make a novena to St. Antoninus of Florence, the great Dominican reforming bishop who deep-cleaned the Archdiocese of Florence.

Also a novena to St. Alphonsus Liguori, reforming bishop of the Diocese of St. Agatha of the Goths, couldn't hurt. One of the popes who refused his resignation said of him that his very shadow governed.

Now you know why I attend the early Mass that has no music. I sometimes miss not having music until a holy day when I am reminded again why I like not having any

It's the reason I started bringing ear muffs to Mass....
